First X-class flare of the year and Rare-type CME


2014 has started strong in terms of space weather activities. On Jan 6, a behind west limb CME/flare (from the old AR 1936) resulted in an energetic SEP event where the >100 MeV proton exceeded the 1pfu threshold (which has been rare for solar cycle 24). On Jan 7, AR 1944 produced the first X-class flare of the year, ~8 hours after the M7.2 class flare associated with the same region. There was no noticeable CME from the M7.2 class flare. But accompanying the X1.2 flare is a fast/wide CME heading towards Earth at ~2400 km/s. The energetic eruptions from the X-class flare and the CME have provided a boost to the ongoing SEP event starting on Jan 6. The CME was expected to interact with Earth's environment and to give a Kp=6-8 geomagnetic storm on Jan 9. In addition, the CME was also expected to impact MAVEN, JUNO, Venus and Mars. The CME arrived at Earth later than expected, late in the day on January 9th, and only gave the Earth a glancing blow, and therefore did not produce any major geomagnetic activity. The CME front was probably more centrally directed at Mars and will be studied in the coming months.
